My life-changing experience as a steering group member

Kirsty

Kirsty tells us about her transformational experience on the Our Minds Our Future steering group.

Joining the steering group for Our Minds Our Future has been the most confidence enhancing and knowledge boosting social action project that I have been involved in. With aspects of the training sessions, I found myself questioning ‘why haven’t I been taught this’. 15 years in the education system and yet school never taught me about my human rights.

Recruiting young people across the UK, the group enabled different areas and young people’s experiences to be represented, heard and acted upon.  We were able to learn from, and support each other throughout. The training opportunities enabled me to consolidate my skills and knowledge, and utilise them within the campaign, its development and as an active citizen.

The steering group became like a family and we are still in touch today, despite living all over the UK. It has opened doors to many other opportunities outside of the campaign and enabled me to enhance my professional network and connections.

Kirsty was a member of the very first steering group, helping to build the Our Minds Our Future campaign from an idea into a reality. If you want to pick up where Kirsty and the team left off, leading Our Minds Our Future over the next 12 months, be sure to get in your application by 5pm Sunday 28th April.
